Go back to the old atmosphere. Classic at On Lock Shop

Whoever passes by Charoenkrung Must be familiar with ancient cafes. Which is full of charm and absolutely classic atmosphere Formerly On Lock, a traditional coffee shop established for over 80 years, is now famous for its breakfast menu. Dessert and the concentration of authentic coffee recipes That still maintains the quality to this day
On Lok Yun
Friends like this Probably imagine that the shop must have only old people Come to sit and hold your knees for sure But unexpectedly when we arrived, there were people of all ages who came to share interest in this retro style shop.

The highlight of the shop is still old Thai. Looking inside to find a wooden table. Old furniture is aged for nearly ten tables. With a storage cabinet that reminds of the past

The atmosphere in which people sit and read newspapers, sipping hot tea in the morning, the police arrives to order iced coffee before going to work. A group of friends who intend to wait for breakfast here are still familiar every day.

The menu that is featured in the restaurant is probably the American breakfast in many sizes to choose from. Those who are scared of eating are not full, order a full menu Fried egg + Ham + Sausage + Bacon + Chinese sausage And there are other menus To try to order

Anyone who likes to eat traditional coffee must try iced coffee here. Let me say that the strong aroma coffee is good. Eaten together with the menu, then have to order as custard bread That looks like a fried egg Of course, because it is made from egg whites. Served with soft bread

There are also other menus such as poached eggs, egg breads, sandwiches, desserts such as cold bread, buttered bread and other beverages. The food taste is good according to the breakfast style. You can choose to cook as you like, with every table of ingredients.

There is also serving hot Chinese tea. While waiting to order food without charge. Do not worry about the price. Going home fully, is definitely comfortable.

Those who like the old atmosphere Come to read the newspaper, sip hot tea Wait for the breakfast to be served. Try to stop by at Charoen Krung Road, Soi 4, or anyone convenient to get to the BTS to get off Hua Lamphong Station and take a chic tuk tuk. The shop is open daily from 05.30 - 16.00 hrs.

Some famous universities are dealing with reports about their financial ties to businessman and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT, has ordered an independent investigation into financing of MIT’s Media Lab. The order comes after the head of the laboratory resigned over its ties to Epstein.

Separately, other universities that accepted his money say they have no plans to return the donations.

The issue of questionable donations has sent shockwaves through the world of education. It shows the problems educators face as they decide whether to accept money from people accused of wrongdoing.

FILE PHOTO: U.S. financier Jeffrey Epstein appears in a photograph taken for the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services' sex offender registry March 28, 2017 and obtained by Reuters July 10, 2019.

Jeffrey Epstein was a wealth manager who was seen with the rich, famous and powerful people. He owned a private island in the Caribbean, homes in Paris and New York City and a New Mexico farm.

Epstein was arrested in July on federal sex-trafficking charges. His arrest brought new attention to old claims that he had sexually abused women and girls. He killed himself in jail last month while awaiting his trial.

For three years, Joi Ito served as director of the MIT Media Lab. He resigned from both the lab and from his position as a professor, the school’s president announced on Saturday.

The resignation came a day after The New Yorker reported that the media lab had a bigger fundraising relationship with Epstein than it had admitted earlier. The magazine also said the media lab tried to cover up the nature of the relationship.

In Rhode Island, Brown University announced on Monday that it has placed Peter Cohen, a fundraising director, on leave. This followed a report that Cohen helped cover up Epstein’s connections when he was working at the MIT Lab.

A Brown spokesman also said the university did not receive donations from Jeffrey Epstein.

Epstein University Donations

MIT was not the only school to receive money from the businessman over the years. He donated tens of millions of dollars to Harvard University and other causes. It made him popular with some professors and scientists. Yet he himself never finished college.

Harvard says it already spent $6.5 million that Epstein donated in 2003. That was before he admitted in court to soliciting a minor for prostitution. The University of Arizona and the University of British Columbia in Canada have said they are not returning the tens of thousands of dollars they received years ago. They said the money came from charitable groups Epstein operated, and they did not know the connection to him at the time.

Ohio State University has not said what will come of the money it received from Epstein, including the $2.5 million he donated in 2007.

MIT Media Lab connection

In a letter on Saturday, MIT President Rafael Reif called the claims in The New Yorker “deeply disturbing.” He said the university is asking lawyers to investigate.

Last month, Reif reported that MIT accepted about $800,000 from Epstein over 20 years.

The New Yorker reports that the businessman helped to arrange at least $7.5 million in donations. That includes $2 million from Microsoft founder Bill Gates and $5.5 million from investor Leon Black.

MIT listed Epstein as “disqualified’ in its donor database. However, the Media Lab continued taking gifts from him and marked his donations as anonymousThe New Yorker reported.

Last week, Ito said that Epstein gave him $525,000 for the Media Lab and another $1.2 million for his own investment funds.

Epstein’s arrest on July 6 fueled national attention in his case. Many people criticized the 2008 deal that enabled him to avoid more serious federal charges.

Critics question why university professors and other officials would take money from someone like Epstein.

“Like politicians, higher education leaders are addicted to money from big donors,” wrote Larry Edelman in The Boston Globe. “New labs, dorms, and performing arts centers aren’t cheap.”

Alibaba Founder Jack Ma Resigns as Company Chief

Founder of Alibaba group Jack Ma arrives for the Tech for Good summit, May 15, 2019 in Paris.

Alibaba Founder Jack Ma Resigns as Company Chief

Jack Ma has resigned as chairman of Alibaba Group, the world's biggest e-commerce business.

Ma is one of China's wealthiest and best-known business leaders. He stepped down as Alibaba’s chief on his 55th birthday. The move was part of a process announced a year ago.

He will stay on as a member of the Alibaba Partnership, a 36-member group.

Ma, a former English teacher, founded Alibaba in 1999 to connect Chinese exporters to retail businesses in North America.

China's growing consumer market is now central to Alibaba’s business. The company has expanded into online banking, entertainment and cloud computing. Chinese businesses were responsible for 66 percent of its $16.7 billion in earnings from March through June of this year.

Slowing sales

Chinese retailing is facing increased risks during the current trade war between China and the United States. The war has raised the cost of U.S. imports in China.

Growth in online sales slowed to 17.8 percent in the first half of 2019 as the country’s economic growth slowed. The 2018 growth rate was 23.9 percent.

The total amount of goods sold throughout Alibaba's e-commerce businesses rose 25 percent last year to $853 billion. By comparison, the biggest U.S. e-commerce company, Amazon.com Inc., reported total sales of $277 billion.

Joe Tsai is Alibaba's deputy chairman. Tsai told reporters in May the company is "on the right side" of issues in U.S.-Chinese trade talks. He added that Alibaba stands to improve with Beijing's promise to increase imports and a growing consumer market.

Growth of online sales

Alibaba was established at a time when few Chinese were active online. As internet use spread, the company expanded into consumer-centered retailing and services. Few Chinese used credit cards, so Alibaba created the Alipay online payments system.

The Hurun Report, which reports on wealth in China, estimates Ma's financial worth as $38 billion.

In 2015, the businessman bought The South China Morning Post, Hong Kong's biggest English-language newspaper.

Alibaba’s new chairman is Daniel Zhang, who has been with the company for 12 years.

Alibaba's e-commerce business includes business-to-business Alibaba.com. It links foreign buyers with Chinese suppliers of goods from home goods to medical technology. Another Alibaba business is Tmall, with online stores for popular products.

In 2014, Alipay became a financial company, called Ant Financial. Alibaba also operates a film studio and invested in planning and transport services.

Ma faced questions in 2011 when Alibaba gave control of Alipay to a company he controlled without immediately informing shareholders. Alibaba said the move was necessary to obey Chinese law. However, some financial experts said the company was paid too little for a valuable property. Alibaba and shareholders Yahoo and Japan’s Softbank later settled the dispute.

Business experts have questioned the Alibaba Partnership, which gives Ma and a group of company officials more control over the business than shareholders.

Ma has argued that such a system helps Alibaba to center on long-term development instead of reacting to pressure from financial markets.

Cough up

EPISODE 190909 / 09 SEP 2019

Summary

Feifei has learned an impressive new skill and has won a bet. Will Neil pay her? He's feeling unwell. But when she asks him to ‘cough up’, he doesn’t seem too keen. Learn how to use this phrase in The English We Speak.

Transcript

Feifei
Good to be back at work, Neil?

Neil
Yes, Feifei. I feel a bit better now. Just got a… just a little... just a bit of a cough.

Feifei
Anyway, it’s good to have you here because you can finally pay me.

Neil
Oh. Right. Why’s that?

Feifei
Well, remember you said you didn’t believe I could stand on my head?

Neil
I do. I said I would give you £10 if you can do it.

Feifei
Yes. Well…

Neil
No way!

Feifei
There we are. On my head. £10 please. Time to cough up, Neil.

Neil
OK, OK! You can come down now.

Feifei
Not bad huh? Now, how about you ‘cough up’, and I explain what it means?

Neil
Hey, I was only joking about the £10. Oh OK, there you go.

Feifei
Thank you. If you ‘cough up’, it means you give someone money, especially if you don’t want to.

Neil
Yes, I didn’t want to give Feifei the money, but I said I would so I had to cough up.

Feifei
Indeed. Time for some examples…

Examples

I waited two whole weeks for my new TV to be delivered. And then I had to cough up an extra £15 for the delivery! I can’t believe it.

My last trip to the library was expensive. I had to cough up for the fines for all the books I returned late. Whoops.

When I sat on my colleague’s glasses he asked me to cough up £100 to buy a new pair. I must admit, the new ones are an improvement.

Neil
You're listening to The English We Speak from BBC Learning English. The expression we're looking at in this programme is 'to cough up'.

Feifei
Neil, that cough is still sounding bad. Have you tried the cough medicine I use?

Neil
Not yet. It’s just a little expensive. £10 for a little bottle of medicine!

Feifei
It’s worth it. Listen, if you won’t cough up, I’ll give you the £10 back if you promise to buy it.

Neil
That’s very kind.

Feifei
Not a problem. And while you go to the pharmacy, I’m going to practise presenting the programme standing on my head. It’s good for blood circulation, apparently.

Neil
Standing on your head is one thing, but presenting a whole programme? No way.

Feifei
Are you sure! £10 says I can!

Neil
Haha. OK then. Bye.

Feifei
Bye.

Duterte won’t certify SOGIE bill as urgent – Panelo

By:  - Reporter / @NCorralesINQ
 / 09:27 AM September 11, 2019

MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte will not certify as urgent the Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Gender Expression (SOGIE) Equality Bill, Malacañang said Wednesday.

“Actually what he meant was an anti-discrimination law or bill, not the SOGIE bill. Not that one,” Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in an interview on CNN Philippines’ The Source.

“He was referring— In fact he said, ‘I have that, we have that in Davao.’ So he was really, specifically referring to that Anti-Discrimination Law in Davao,” Panelo added.

He said the Anti-Discrimination Law in Davao “refers to all.”

“You cannot discriminate the handicapped, special children, the third gender, everyone,” he said.

Panelo issued the clarification after Duterte told reporters in Malacañang that he would certify the SOGIE bill as urgent.

READ: Duterte will certify SOGIE Bill as urgent

Asked categorically if he would certify the bill as urgent, he replied: “Yes, whatever would make the mechanism, what would make them happy. I want to be like Senator [Juan Ponce] Enrile: Gusto ko happy siya [I want her to be happy].”

Panelo, however, said the President would certify as urgent an anti-discrimination bill, and not the SOGIE bill.

“You cannot legislate for a particular class only.  You are discriminating,” he said.

The Palace official said Duterte wanted a law for all.

“It must be general. That’s what the President doesn’t like, when you discriminate against a particular class,” he said.

He said the anti-discrimination bill would be “an enlarged version of whatever bill you have in mind,” including the LGBTQIA+ community.

“He (Duterte) is outraged by any form of discrimination against any particular class or person,” he said,

Asked if the President would issue an executive order for a third restroom, Panelo said: “ None that I know of at this time. I will ask him.” /gsg
