Introducing Peace for Burma (English Version)

Introducing Peace for Burma

A way to help

Peace for Burma (PFB) is a coalition of Thai and Burmese civil society organisations working to promote democracy in Burma and assist those suffering under the Burmese regime and. Formed in response to the peaceful protests of August 2007 and the subsequent crackdown, the strong coordination between the groups working under the Peace for Burma coalition allows for assistance to those inside Burma to be carried out efficiently and safely.

All of the coalition’s member organisations have longstanding experience working on human rights or humanitarian issues in Thailand, Burma, or regionally – they are listed below with their website details. Burmese member organisations maintain regular contact with sources inside Burma, and have networks to deliver aid to those who need it most.

Peace for Burma activities

In the last few months, Peace for Burma has been instrumental in organizing advocacy initiatives in Thailand to inform both the general Thai public and the international media about the crackdown in Burma and steps the junta should take towards national reconciliation and democracy.

In addition to over twenty demonstrations outside the Burmese Embassy, Chinese Embassy, United Nations, and Thai government buildings, Peace for Burma has:

-          Initiated an advocacy campaign to pressure the Petroleum Authority of Thailand to divest from Burma

-          Submitted letters to UN Special Envoy Ibrahim Gambari, Thai Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont, and ASEAN Secretary-General Dr. Surin Pitsuwan

-          Facilitated the involvement of Thai Buddhist monks in campaigning for Burma

-          Organised photography exhibitions at universities and democracy monuments in Thailand

-          Campaigned for ASEAN to apply targeted economic sanctions against key Burmese government officials

-          Collected signatures for a petition to be submitted to the Thai government

Assistance to those in Burma is directed at both humanitarian needs and those discriminated against for expressing their political views. Due to the sensitivity of these programmes, please contact Peace for Burma directly for further details.
